EU Pig Prices: Steady for the Most Part

2010-03-23Eng

The prices appear to be mostly unchanged on the pigs-mature-for-slaughter market throughout Europe this week. Mostly for the third time in a row, the quotations in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, France and Belgium remained steady. The Swedish and Austrian corrected quotations, respectively, went down by 2 cents. Spain had to accept a 6-cents’ price decrease.

Extended quantities of pigs for slaughter on offer are said to be the reason for the prices to decrease in Spain. On the one hand, this kind of extended offer is attributed to a public holiday there, and on the other hand the farmers have their pigs placed on the market earlier because of the Easter holidays ahead. In Austria, the prices are reported to have decreased, too, as consequence of larger quantities on offer. But this way, the price gap between Germany and Austria was also reduced again.

Trend: Over the past few days, the demand for pork has increased slightly. The quantities of pigs for slaughter on offer continue to be extensive. So, the pig prices are expected to remain unchanged this week.
