EU Pig Prices: Remaining Steady throughout Europe

2010-01-26Eng

This week, the pigs-mature-for-slaughter market appears to be steady throughout Europe again. Apart from the Spanish quotation which was able to achieve a 1-cent plus, the prices remained unchanged. The British and Swedish pig prices also continued to be on an unchanged level. As it comes to their corrected versions, the British and Swedish quotations went down as a result of currency exchange rate changes.

From the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Belgium, Austria and Germany, supply and demand are reported to be well-balanced. Thus, the typical January weakness of the market which had been feared failed to appear this year. In Spain, the slaughter companies’ demand for pork is higher than is supply, thus allowing for a slight price increase. There, the winter weather continues to affect the market.

Trend: The quantities of pigs mature for slaughter on offer are quite substantial indeed, yet they are easily sold on the market. In some regions, larger quantities of pigs are asked to be supplied to allow the slaughter hooks to be operated at full capacity. Therefore, the prices are expected to at least remain steady.
