EU Pig Prices: Quotations Rising Throughout Europe

2010-02-02Eng

Throughout Europe, the pigs-mature-for-slaughter market is affected by increasing prices this week. Contrary to expectations of various market participants, the usual January weakness of prices failed to appear in Europe this time. In most of the European countries, prices are reported to even increase in the last week of January and the first week of February, respectively. The prices in France and Sweden alone remained on an unchanged level, and the quotation even fell in Great Britain.

The price increases reported from Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Austria and Germany are attributed to the ongoing winter weather as much as to good demand for pork. Stating five cents, Austria achieved the leading plus in quotations. About 85 % of the quantities needed of pigs mature for slaughter are on offer in Austria currently. The slower 2-cents’ increase given account of from Spain is attributed to the worse price margin between abattoirs and food retailing.

Trend: The quantities of pigs for slaughter on offer slightly decreasing and the marketing going on smoothly, prospects are friendly on the pigs-mature-for-slaughter market. Thus, the prices are expected to keep steady at least this week.
